Religious leaders are planting seeds of hope this Season of Creation with inspiring messages to their communities, encouraging them to take action around the world. Here are some words from leaders who are taking action:
The Episcopal Conference of Brazil asks us to consider the effects of the climate crisis on human beings: “people fleeing environmental catastrophes, increased emigration due to the effects of climate change and children forced to travel dozens of kilometers in search of a little water.”
From Hong Kong, Cardinal Stephen Chow SJ says that “we can feel helpless, hopeless and powerless. But the Holy Father reminds us to cling to hope during this Season of Creation.” Watch Bishop Chow’s full message (you can activate automatic subtitles in your language)
Representing the Middle East Council of Churches, His Beatitude Patriarch John X, Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, spoke to the faithful noting that “the Season of Creation is a time to renew our relationship with our Creator and with all Creation,” and stressed the need for solidarity, communication and response to the cry of creation.
From Congo, the Auxiliary Bishop of Kisangani, Léonard Ndjate, said that religious leaders are the first to spread the message of “integral ecology,” which calls for a profound change in the way humanity interacts with the environment; and he called the people to action saying that “today’s world needs witnesses.”
For his part, in the United States, Bishop Dolan delivered a homily in which he recalled that, when it comes to the stewardship of our common home, “the challenge is always before us, and that is why, in this time, we are called to be truly attentive.”
